4 December 2006: Winning Workplaces Profiles HPTi in Corporate Success Stories
Winning Workplaces recently profiled HPTi in its series of corporate Success Stories. According to Winning Workplaces, HPTi is proof that a dark business cloud can have a silver lining. In 2003, HPTi faced one of the toughest challenges an organization can face: the death of its leader. While coping with this tragedy and a series of aftershocks, President Tim Keenan assumed leadership of HPTi and steered it through many immediate obstacles. The firm not only survived, but is stronger as a result. HPTi’s leadership works to stay connected to its employees and to regularly bring the organization together through training, community service, and open communication. 28 September 2006: HPTi President Named Best Boss
Timothy Keenan, President of High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTi), has been named a 2006 Best Boss. Sponsored by Winning Workplaces, this award honors innovative leaders of small and midsize businesses who have created tightly knit workplaces and inspired intensely loyal workers. Keenan and 17 other business leaders from across the country were selected for this award from over 100 nominations. They represent areas as diverse as investment management, equestrian products, web hosting, and legal services.
According to Winning Workplaces, Keenan and the other Best Bosses demonstrate a common theme: they fully involve their employees in the success of the organization by offering extensive training, generous benefits, open-book management, and direct ownership. “The Best Bosses understand the connection between employee engagement and the bottom line,” says Mary Corbitt Clark, executive director of Winning Workplaces. “Employees who are valued contribute in response.” Adds Elaine Pofeldt, senior editor of FORTUNE Small Business, “The Best Bosses are listening carefully to their workers and giving them what they want: opportunities to educate themselves continually; the chance to work alongside the best people in their fields; and benefits that ease the complex demands of their lives outside of work.”
Since co-founding HPTi in 1991, Keenan has seen the firm grow to nearly 250 employees. He and his management team have implemented a number of creative and effective initiatives targeted at attracting and retaining quality employees. One of these initiatives, the Transformation Team, creates a forum for employees to offer suggestions and even participate in carrying out ideas for improving the company. When asked about his strong emphasis on employee programs, Keenan stated, “In plain terms, the vision [of HPTi] is to build an environment where we can grow the future leaders of the IT industry.” This year’s winners were announced at the Winning Workplaces Conference and Celebration in Chicago on Sept. 27. The winners were selected through a nomination and application process that evaluated employee satisfaction, benefits, investment in training, and the leader’s personal vision. Applicants had their employees contacted to verify the environment and morale of the workfo rce to establish finalists and eventual winners. The finalists were then screened by a panel of judges that included Winning Workplaces management team and board members, small business owners, and workplace consulting experts. A related story will appear in the October 2006 issue of FORTUNE Small Business, and a full list of winners is available online at winningworkplaces.org and FSB.com. -
