For the fourth consecutive year, the employee of the year for High Performance Technologies, Inc., (HPTi) has earned an American Business Award. Jonathan Goodnight, 2009 Employee of the Year, was named the Best Technical Professional in the country. Joining him in the winner's circle was Lynn Holgate, who was named the Best Support Staffer. The American Business Awards, also known as the “Stevies,” honor business professionals in over 40 categories. Winners are selected from over 2700 entries.

To earn his recognition, Goodnight developed tailored products for his client at the Department of Defense—products that facilitate multi-billion-dollar acquisitions. HPTi was also a finalist in ten other categories, including Best Recognition Event, Best Corporate Communicator, and Best Product Developer.

“We are so proud of our Stevie winners and finalists,” stated company president Tim Keenan. “This is our fifth year participating in the program, and the field of competition gets tougher with each year. HPTi's Barbara Brissett has been appointed to the 2010 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The Award, created by public law in 1987, is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive.

As an Examiner, Brissett is responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the Award. The board is composed of approximately 500 leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and health care organizations, and nonprofits (including government).

Those selected meet the highest standards of qualification and peer recognition. All members of the board must take part in a preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the scoring and evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award.

The Baldrige Award may be given annually in each of six categories: Manufacturing, Service, Small Business, Education, Health Care, and Nonprofit. Awards have been presented to 80 organizations, including the 2009 recipients: Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies, Kansas City, Mo. (manufacturing); MidwayUSA, Columbia, Mo. (small business); AtlantiCare, Egg Harbor Township, N.J. (health care); Heartland Health, St. Joseph, Mo. High Performance Technologies, Inc., has been awarded the contract for Veterans Relationship Management (VRM) Project Monitoring and Control (PM&C) for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This new contract has a potential value of $115 million and includes a base task of one year, with the option for four additional years.

More than just a practical obligation, this is a moral mandate to provide quality health services to the men and women who serve our nation. As President Obama stated on May 5, “...our nation's commitment to our veterans and their families...is a sacred trust, and upholding that trust is a moral obligation.”

“HPTi is proud to be selected to serve our veterans and to add our expertise and leadership to the successful design and development of these critical IT programs under the purview of the VRM PC&M program,” said HPTi President Tim Keenan. “The successful infusion of the architecture, systems engineering, and programmatic discipline of our program architecture approach will ensure our veterans access to their benefits at a service level previously unavailable to them.”

  • 30 January 2010: HPTi Hosts the Third Annual Problem-Solving Competition at Penn State

On Saturday, January 30, High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTi) hosted the third annual Problem-Solving Competition at Penn State in cooperation with the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST). A dedicated HPTi team defined and developed the competition, and ten of these team members were on hand to assist in running the competition. Two internal testing teams ensured that the problem was well designed, feasible, and at the appropriate level of difficulty. The challenge concept was developed and led by Craig Suchanec—a Penn State graduate and HPTi developer.

IST Professor Gerry Santoro kicked off the competition, praising the students for showing initiative and explaining the importance of participating. He noted, “The competition is a way to demonstrate the skills students have learned in IST and how these skills could benefit future employers.”

The competition enjoyed a record turnout. The 17 three-person teams drew upon their skills in requirements analysis, planning, and team-based problem solving as they were tasked with designing and building a siege engine that could knock down a wall of foam bricks. Competitors received a set of requirements and needed to plan for, acquire, build, and demonstrate that their siege engine could knock down a sample wall—all within approximately three hours. Winners of the competition knocked down 44 of the 52 bricks. The top three teams were all given cash awards by HPTi.

Marty Shoup, HPTi's lead coordinator for the competition, said, “We really enjoy seeing the unique solutions the students develop. The benefit to the students (besides the monetary benefit if they won), was that they got to exercise their creative problem solving muscles and learn to deal with problems typically encountered in the real world.”

Reporters were on hand from the PSU campus newspaper (http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2010/02/01/ist_students_build_catapults_i.aspx) and an article was published on the university official news site: http://live.psu.edu/story/44330.
